GPT-5.6 Luna is now free for everyone

One of the more interesting changes in ChatGPT is the arrival of GPT-5.6 Luna on the Free plan. Instead of giving free users access to a heavily restricted model, OpenAI is making Luna available for unlimited text conversations under normal usage and abuse guardrails.

That is a pretty big deal. For many people, the biggest barrier to using a powerful AI isn't whether the model exists. It's how quickly they hit a usage limit. With Luna, a free user can keep using the model for everyday questions, studying, writing, brainstorming, and general problem-solving without constantly worrying about running out of messages.

Luna isn't necessarily the most powerful model OpenAI offers. Paid plans still provide access to higher-end reasoning models and greater usage limits for more demanding work. But that's also what makes the Free-tier decision interesting. You don't need the absolute best model to get a surprisingly capable AI assistant.

For students in particular, this could make a real difference. A free user can ask Luna to explain a difficult physics concept, work through a chemistry problem, critique an essay, or simply keep asking questions until the topic finally makes sense. The important part is that the AI becomes something you can actually use as a regular learning tool rather than something you have to ration.

There are still limits around other features such as uploads, image generation, voice, deep research, and other advanced capabilities. So "unlimited" doesn't mean every ChatGPT feature is unlimited. It specifically matters for ordinary text conversations.

The bigger story is what this says about the AI market. Models that once required a paid subscription are increasingly becoming accessible to people who can't afford one. The gap between free and paid AI isn't disappearing, but it is getting harder to define simply as "bad model versus good model."

For a free ChatGPT user, GPT-5.6 Luna may be enough for a surprisingly large percentage of everyday AI work. And that might be the most important part of the announcement.
